Why RV Life?

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

In January 2022, we joked about the idea of van life. We talked about leaving behind the hustle of work, house remodels & repairs, trying to start a homestead, and just general life stressors by getting a van, building it to our specifications, and leaving on a trip. However at that time, we weren’t sure about the logistics- what about my job, what about his job, what about money, and more. How could we leave good jobs for the unknown? We put the idea of van or RV life in our back pockets.

In May 2022, Breanne was becoming increasingly frustrated at work- doing many tasks outside her job descriptions and getting pats on the back without raises or promotions. It became clear that Breanne was going to leave her job. At that moment, it occurred to them both that maybe this could be the start of a different life- the life they joked about a few months earlier.

In August, we knew that the 9-5 grind and the stressors of working a job you really don’t like until you die or retire is not a path that we wanted to follow. So we made a crazy choice- we were going to buy a van or RV, leave our typical jobs, and try something different.

So we started our search. In September 2022, we went to five different RV & Van dealerships. We quickly decided a van was too small for our needs as two plus size people with two dogs. We also felt pre-built vans were so expensive without the luxuries of a RV. Eventually, we decided a Class C RV would better meet our needs.

We put an offer in on a new RV; but something just didn’t feel right. All our interactions with the RV company felt phony and dishonest, like they were giving us the run around about financing and the RV price. It was a tough decision but we decide to walk away from this RV. Discouraged from the experience, we decided to buy a used RV. After seeing quite a few used RVs, we finally found Lady Freebird. She became ours at the end of Sept 2022.

And so began our rush to RV life- remodeling our house, selling our belongings, getting a storage unit, prepping to sell the house, quitting our jobs, creating a plan and a budget, and then selling our house. It was a whirlwind. All while preparing the RV, ourselves, and our lives for moving to RV life.

So Why RV Life?

This RV journey is so much more than the time we plan on spending in the RV. It’s learning about ourselves as individuals, as a couple, and as humans who are navigating a world that is not easy.

A large part of participating in RV life is to just be us; to be true to who we are, to our beliefs, to our values and to find a way of life that can both sustain us.

We want to embrace a simple life of sleeping and waking with the sun, cooking our meals, sitting by campfires, taking the dogs for long walks, seeing the country, and taking deep breaths.

We want to reconnect with nature and people and ourselves.

We want to step our of the traditional roles set forth for us, and pave our own paths: paths that spark joy, calm our souls, and inspire us to be our best selves.

RV life is not for everyone. Heck it might not be for us; but we sure hope it is. And we hope to use our time in the RV reconnecting ourselves, each other, and a life we love.
