These shoes were made for Walk’N tours.
Dave and I do not just want to see new places, but we want to experience them, learn about them, and be immersed in what each place has to offer. When we started this trip, we were taking a lot of tours but we felt a lot of stress because of the cost to our budget, the need to be on a certain clock, and the fact the tours were often rain or shine. (We actually took one tour in such cold weather, outside, that we had some minor frostbite.)
So how do we experience and learn about new places without a tour?!? Googling only takes us so far and requires a lot of time.
Enter Walk’n Tours!
We discovered Walk’n Tours in Montgomery, Alabama where we took “The Montgomery Civil Rights Walk of Freedom Walking Tour.” We loved this tour option!
Walk’n Tours is a phone based app that lets you take control of your touring experience. It offers audio tours in over 50 cities. The tours are easy to follow and user friendly. Before we start each tour, we review the tour specificis (miles long, time needed to complete, and starting point).
Then we download the tour to be able to listen even if we lose service. Each tour has a recommended starting spot with the option to start in any of the tour stops. Once at the starting location, Dave and I put in our bluetooth head phones and press play. The tours use your phone;s location to determine where you are on the tour and te help direct you from place to place. The app even has a compass of sorts that points in the direction of the next stop.
We were able to see some real highlights in Montgomery, such as the Rosa Park bench, the Rosa Parks Museum, the Freedom Riders Museum, the Civil rights Memorial, and more. At each stop and often while walking from place to place, your tour guide is telling you about the history, heritage, and culture of the city you are in. At the museum stops, we are able to pause the tours, walk through the museums, and then resume the tour at our pace.
As two people who like to travel and learn, being able to discuss things we hear from the tour guide without being rude is a nice opportunity. Dave and I find ourselves pausing the tour to take pictures for our social media and to discuss interesting things we’ve learned. Being able to walk at our own pace is also important to us. The tour provides some walking music when it gives extended periods to walk between stops. If you are not into the walking music, you also have the option to pause the tour and just restart at the next location.
Another nice option, we have utilized is being able to pause the tour one day and continue the next day. In Montgomery, we spent a lot of time in the museums. So we actually paused the tour, spent a few hours pursuing the different museums, eating lunch, and then heading home to get out of the Alabama heat. Then the next day, we just started where we left off.
This touring option has saved us easily hundreds of dollars with tours often costing upwards of 40-50 dollars each. It has given flexibility with our time to take videos and pictures for our social media and family. It has let us sleep in on groggy mornings since we decide what time the tours start. And it has fulfilled our desire to learn more about the places we visit. It also comes with a guarantee that you’ll love the tour or you get your money back. (so if you don’t fully believe us, you still have the option to use the guarantee… although I promise you, we are right)
Walk’n tours offers individual tours for $5.99 each or for $11.99 you can sign up for a year long subscription to all the tours they have to offer. Since dave and I knew we were visiting lots of new places, we signed up for the yearly subscription. So far we have taken tours in Montgomery Alabama, Savannah Georgia, Birmingham Alabama, Charleston South Carolina, and New Orleans Louisiana. With plans to take so many more tours in future cities: Albuquerque New Mexico, Denver Colorado, Portland Oregon, San Francisco California, Sante Fe New Mexico, Seattle Washington, and more.
